How a junk removal quote is built

Every junk removal quote in Lethbridge is the sum of three things: the disposal fee the hauler pays at the Waste and Recycling Centre, the labour to carry and load, and the truck time to drive it out along 28 Street North and back. The industry convention is to price by how much of the truck the load fills. The largest national operator explains its method the same way: a single item is priced on its own by size, and anything more is priced by the space it takes up, in one-eighth-truck steps. Its full truck is roughly ten feet long, eight feet wide and five feet high and holds about two tons. Local haulers use the same logic with their own truck sizes, which is why a couch and a mattress quote as a fraction, and a garage quotes as a truck.

This site does not publish a rate card, because the hauler sets the price and it changes with fuel and landfill rates. What you can do is understand the disposal side, which is public, so you can tell whether a quote is reasonable.

The landfill fees underneath every quote

The City of Lethbridge publishes the tipping fees at the Waste and Recycling Centre, and these are the hauler's hard costs. General mixed waste, the category most household junk falls into, is $115 per tonne with a $5 minimum. Mixed construction and demolition waste is also $115 per tonne. Sorted materials are much cheaper: scrap metal, brick, block and porcelain sinks and toilets are $10 per tonne, clean drywall and lumber are $65 per tonne, and clean topsoil and sod are $5 per tonne.

Worked example from those rates: a half-tonne of mixed basement junk costs the hauler about $57.50 at the gate. The same weight sorted into metal and clean wood would cost under $40. That gap is why a crew that sorts on the driveway can quote lower than one that tips everything as garbage, and why a load of one material is always cheaper than a mixed one.

Surcharges that show up on the wrong day

Two City surcharges catch people who haul their own loads. An untarped load costs an extra $20 up to 1,000 kg and $40 above that, and in a city with 116 days a year of wind at 40 km/h or more, a loose load is also a hazard on Highway 3. A fridge, freezer or air conditioner that still contains Freon carries a $35 per unit surcharge unless you show proof that a licensed person removed the refrigerant. Both are built into a hauler's quote, because the hauler tarps the truck and handles the Freon paperwork as routine.

There is also a designated-material surcharge of $50 per tonne on a garbage load that is more than a quarter recyclable material such as cardboard, wood, concrete, metal or drywall. Sorting is not optional at the gate; it is priced.

What makes one Lethbridge job cost more than another

Weight per volume. A truck of drywall and tile weighs several times what a truck of couches and boxes weighs, and the landfill charges by the tonne. Renovation debris is quoted higher than furniture for that reason alone.

Access and labour. A basement suite off a narrow stairwell in an older north-side house, or a walk-up with no alley, takes longer than a garage with the door open. The crew quotes the extra time, not a surcharge.

Distance. Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte and Taber are grouped by route day so the drive is shared. A single small item outside the city may wait for that day rather than pay for a dedicated trip.

The free and low-cost options, so you can compare honestly

If you own a truck and have a Saturday, Lethbridge residents can bring up to 250 kg of household and bulky waste to the Waste and Recycling Centre for free every Saturday, year-round; above that, the normal tipping rates apply. Residential utility customers also get two free Large Item Service pickups a year, at least three months apart, booked through 311, for up to 250 kg or five large items that two people can lift. Both are worth using when your pile fits the limits and the timing does not matter.

Paid junk removal is for the rest: renovation debris, tires, fences and decks, electronics, sod and concrete are all refused by the Large Item Service, and anything over 250 kg or needing a same-week date is beyond the free programs. A phone quote costs nothing, and the crew will tell you if the City's free option is the better fit for what you have.
