Coalhurst is 15 km northwest of Lethbridge on Highway 3, a former coal-mining community once called Bridgend that became a town in 1995. The 2021 census counted 2,869 residents in about 1,025 occupied homes, after growth of nearly 35 percent between 2011 and 2016, so the housing stock is a mix of older village lots and new subdivisions that are only now reaching their first renovations and garage purges.
The Town runs weekly curbside garbage collection and a recycling depot in the rear yard near the fire station at 702 55 Avenue for flattened cardboard and clean plastics numbered 1 to 7; those recyclables are trucked to the Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Centre. Once each spring, Coalhurst collects larger household items that regular pickup will not take, including furniture, appliances without Freon, metal, electronics and yard waste. Outside that one week, a couch or a fridge with Freon needs a truck.
Coalhurst is grouped with Coaldale and Picture Butte on route days, and a full truckload here is priced the same as one in Lethbridge; a single small item may wait for the next route day. Common jobs: garage and shed cleanouts on the older lots, deck and fence tear-outs after a chinook, and appliance swaps in the newer subdivisions.
